| “Leadership & Me” |
|
To me a leader is like a conductor. Most of his work is done behind the scene—the audience sees only an infinitesimal part of it. He keeps track of details even as he keeps the big picture in focus. (The conductor knows the performance of every piece of the orchestra even as he is listening to the whole.) His job is interpretation, communication, instruction, implementation, coordination, honing and, of course, getting his people to perform to the peak of their abilities. His presence appears almost inconsequential in the final performance but it is the vital pin to hold together the edifice, to make a harmonious whole. To me it is imperative that a good leader elicits the reaction of, "We did it", rather than, "He made us do it". The leader, needless to say, has of necessity to perform at high levels all the time, higher than his followers.
